Hunters Creek New Relief Middle School is located in
South Orlando next to Freedom High School on Taft
Vineland Road and South John Young Parkway. This 170,517
SF project consists of eight buildings surrounding a
common courtyard.
The construction of this Orange County Public School
board facility presented unique challenges. Construction
was at a critical stage of construction in 1994 when
three hurricanes blew through Central Florida in the
space of 40 days. These storms, and a lightning strike,
caused considerable damage to some of the tilt up wall
panels. These panels had to be replaced along with
damaged structural steel, plumbing and electrical
systems. PPI, working with the owner, was able to assess
the damage and work with the at-risk insurance carrier
to promptly deal with claims and acceleration costs.
The impact could have been devastating to the project
but in the end construction resumed in a timely manner,
the damage was repaired with no delay claims and the
project finished two months ahead of schedule.
